Most seniors show up to their session thinking the goal is to look good in front of a camera. And honestly? That's part of it. But the sessions that end up meaning the most are the ones where something real showed up too.
Not a backdrop. Not a prop from a studio closet. Something that actually belongs to them.

Your Senior Portraits Should Feel Like You
Here's something I see happen a lot. A senior shows up with something that looks cute or trendy, and it photographs fine. But it doesn't say anything. It's just filler. It could belong to anyone.
A meaningful prop is different. It's specific. It's earned. It's tied to something you actually live and love.
A grandfather's truck. A mom's dress. A jersey that went through four years of practice and games and early mornings. Those things carry weight because they carry a story.
That's the difference between a portrait that looks good and one that actually means something.
Meet Mikayla, and Why Her Session Stopped Me in My Tracks
Mikayla is an artist. Not in a casual, I-dabble-sometimes way. In a this-is-genuinely-who-I-am way.
So when she came to her senior session, she brought her easel. Her brushes. Her palette. And an energy that said she was completely at home in all of it.
We set up in an open field and just let her be herself. She painted. She laughed. She ended up with color on her arms, her shirt, and honestly a little on her nose. That was the whole point. - Sports and activities — a jersey, a ball, a helmet, cleats worn into the ground
- Creative pursuits — an instrument, a sketchbook, a camera, brushes and a palette
- Something inherited or borrowed — a grandparent's item, a parent's piece, something with a story behind it
- A passion that is genuinely yours — if it is real to you, it belongs in your session
- A place or vehicle — a family truck, a location that means something to you
The goal is not to fill the frame. The goal is to tell the truth about who you are right now.
This Season of Your Life Is Worth Getting Right
Senior year is specific. It is unrepeatable. You are not a kid anymore, but you have not fully stepped into what comes next yet either.
That in-between season deserves to be marked honestly. Not with what looks good on a mood board, but with what is actually true about you right now.
For parents, these portraits are about pride. About reflection. About seeing your kid and really seeing them. For seniors, they are about being known as who you actually are. When the right details show up in a session, both of those things happen at once.
A prop that means something to you is not just a visual element. It is evidence. It tells anyone who looks at that portrait that this is who this person was becoming.
